This paper in the field of cultural memory studies addresses the workings of memory, or more precisely – a politics of memory whereby the image of the intelligentsia and its role in the Holocaust vanishes from the collective consciousness. The relative visibility of peasants denouncing Jews, murdering them and plundering their property is accompanied by an invisibility of the intelligentsia and its essential role in reinforcing the exclusion and antisemitic patterns of behavior before the Holocaust which facilitated direct involvement in these events, as well as an invisibility of the intelligentsia’s own participation in the events of the Holocaust.

The text analyses contemporary historical discourse on polish Communism in a narratological Perspective.  The subject of research is using the word “communism”, social imaginary associated with it in the text of professional historians recognized as the most important in the field of contemporary history: Włodzimierz Borodziej, Andrzej Friszke, Andrzej Garlicki, Jerzy Eisler, Krystyna Kersten, Zbigniew Landau, Adam Leszczyński, Paweł Machcewicz, Mirosława Marody, Piotr Madajczyk, Piotr Osęka, Andrzej Paczkowski, Marcin Kula, Paweł Wieczorkiewicz, Marcin Zaremba, Jan Żaryn. The author analyzes the characteristic images and valuation related to communism, the dual division into power and society, and the a priori of historical writing

The cultural memory of March ’68 in Poland – exodus of Polish Jews – can be reconstructed by analyzing cultural texts such as memoirs, autobiographical pieces, literary works, documentary and feature films, press articles as well as historical and sociological treatises, speeches given by politicians and state officials, essays popularizing history in the press, excerpts from school textbooks, and papers delivered at conferences. The metahistorical perspective suggests that this memory splits into two separate albeit interacting stories: a heroic narrative of rebellion and insurgency (a new beginning for tainted victims of Communism) and a tragic tale of exodus and exclusion (an irrevocable ending). These two stories exist side by side; sometimes they merge, entwining around the same actors and events. However, one narrative always takes the lead role, while the other remains hidden, tolerated only under very specific conditions.

The article discusses the desire for a mother and melancholic self-destruction of the female characters in the "Passing" by Nella Larsen. It cites the theories of Sigmund Freud on the loss of an object, Julia Kristeva's description of a melancholic and Judith Butler's definition of realistic diagnosis. The author claims that under the surface of clearly expressed racial tensions in the "Passing," the two protagonists have a problem of gender identity and sexual desire. The author demonstrates why the protagonists are looking the mother, their object of desire.

Tekst analizuje sytuację młodych kobiet w nauce (głównie w humanistyce). W oparciu o dane statystyczne autorka pokazuje, że kobieca ścieżka kariery naukowej rozwija się często wolniej niż męska. Przyczyn takiego stanu rzeczy upatruje w określonych wzorcach socjalizacji i komunikacji, kształtowanych pod wpływem wyobrażeń o tradycyjnych rolach płciowych i relacjach między płciami w społeczeństwie, a także w braku rozwiązań systemowych ułatwiających kobietom realizację w sferze prywatnej i publicznej. Z tekstu wyłania się obraz uniwersytetu jako przestrzeni, w której reprodukowane są patriarchalne relacje władzy, a także obraz naukowczyni jako współczesnej „Siłaczki” uginającej się pod ciężarem wyboru: rodzina czy kariera. Autorka upatruje rozwiązania trudnej sytuacji kobiet w nauce w reformie akademii w duchu etycznych i politycznych założeń przyświecających powstaniu gender studies.

The paper aims at indicating opportunities and threats faced by gender studies in Poland. The author presents institutional problems (i.e. organizational, financial), which limit dynamic development of the discipline and its impact on the society. She also discusses tensions between an academic affiliation of gender studies and its political aspirations rooted in the tradition of feminist movement. Finally, the author describes recent methodological debates on gender discourse—its theoretical inspirations and practical use.

While in her early writing Manuela Gretkowska played with the categories of gender, sexuality and nation, deconstructed them successfully, using the literary strategies and figures such as parody, camp, grotesque, in her recent novels she faces the problem of female experience in Poland (or the experience of Polish women) along with the one of description of such, implying the notion of political involvement of the writer. Works such as "A Pole" (2001), "A European" (2004) and "A Citizen" (2008) grasp not only personal experience of a female author (pregnancy, literary work, decision to settle down in Poland), but the political situation of Poland having the direct impact on the life of Polish women (EU accession, anti-abortion wars, the position and influence of the Catholic Church, political activity of the Women’s Party established by Gretkowska). Without feminist labelling Gretkowska in fact demonstrates and achieves what may be considered the core of feminist rhetorical policy (personal is political, feminist moment of truth, consciousness rising and speak out), though creating and sustaining the tension between the female experience (Polish Mother, domestic martyr) and feminist activity (warrior, political advocate). Interestingly, her recent works are written in a form of diary, which shortens the distance between the author’s personal “message” and perception of readers, who are allowed to find the “truth” about themselves (their own lives) in the act of identification with the author’s experience. According to Adriana Cavarero ("Relating Narratives: Storytelling and Selfhood", 2000), one’s basic drive is for listening to the story of one’s own life narrated by the other. In the act of storytelling selfhood is established and recognized in the public sphere. As for Hannah Arendt, to whose works Cavarero refers, private life is meaningless for others; it is deprived of memory, language, history. Reading Gretkowska’s novels, Polish women are encouraged to build their political subjectivity, recognize their individual and collective needs and desires, learn how to fight for their rights. Openly a(nti)political in her early works, Gretkowska has recently become politically involved in the public and literary activity. The aim of the paper is to grasp this change not only in textual but in rhetorical aspect of her fiction as well, accompanied by the change(?) in women’s reflection on their situation in Poland after 1989.

The article is devoted to a selection of women's (auto)biographies published in Poland after 2000. The author concentrates on two problems: firstly she proves that female (auto)biography can be included in the identity politics which in Poland is a part of transformation discourse and a reaction towards it. Women assume here the role of the chroniclers of family/national community, but are also the reproducers and guards of the social order. The narrators often disregard the "female experience of history:" womanhood is here transparent and its traces need to be searched in the gaps of the narrative. Secondly, the author shows that women's (auto)biographies are not only a response to identity/memory politics but also a pertinent element of the process of producing the past subordinated to the stakes of contemporaneity. The author also points to recent trends in feminist studies in women's (auto)biographies.

Autorka analizuje powstające w rożnych okresach historycznych biografie Wandy Wasilewskiej. Usiłuje odtworzyć mechanizmy konstruowania figury komunistki w polskim dyskursie publicznym, zbadać, jak funkcjonowała ona w społecznym odbiorze, a także ustalić, jak zmieniało się jej znaczenie w procesie przemian historycznych i kulturowych. Autorka pokazuje, że tworzenie spójnej biografii jednostki – szczególnie jednostki ważnej w historii danej zbiorowości – dokonuje się w odpowiedzi na tożsamościowe poszukiwania wspólnoty: służy wytworzeniu zbiorowej biografii jako koherentnej całości. Zwraca uwagę, że pisanie biografii Wasilewskiej jako komunistki było i wciąż jest swoistym „wytwarzaniem komunizmu” w Polsce. Komunizm zaś w szerokim planie jest ważnym – jeśli nie najważniejszym w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach – komponentem polskiej zbiorowej tożsamości.

Tekst jest nie tyle próbą „wydobycia z milczenia” polskich komunistek okresu stalinowskiego, ile zrekonstruowania współczesnych opowieści o nich: odsłonięcia najpopularniejszych tropów i figur narracyjnych, ujawnienia najbardziej rozpowszechnionych konwencji mówienia o nich. Jak radzą sobie dziś z działaczkami komunistycznymi badacze i badaczki, artyści i artystki, popularyzatorzy i popularyzatorki wiedzy o historii Polski? Jakie miejsce wyznaczają im w swoich projektach historiograficznych? Lub inaczej: do czego służą komunistki we współczesnym dyskursie publicznym w Polsce, w którym historia Polski Ludowej jest wciąż kluczowym zakładnikiem gier symbolicznych i realnych o prawomocność i władzę?

The article analyzes the mechanisms of constructing the history of the Left in the memoirs of Polish communist women in the 1960s. The author examines the contents overtly expressed by life writers, as well as those passed over in silence or hinted at indirectly, in Aesopian language. She notes that most of the memoirs ended abruptly with the description of the outbreak of the Second World War, or its end in 1945, which means that the entire postwar period, when the new, socialist order was established, was left out. The author argues that in the post-Stalinist period the remembrance of Stalinism was uncomfortable not only because of the reminiscence of violence used by the authorities of that time, but also because of the reminiscence of values and attitudes they sought to bring to life: internationalist, egalitarian (including the field of gender policy), materialistic. In the post-1956 period, marked by the slogan of ‘building the Polish road to socialism’ and by the return to the traditional gender roles, memoirs of female communists, ex-dignitaries of the communist Party, ‘smuggled’ the contents admittedly inconsistent with the Party line, but still present on the horizon of memory of ‘old communists,’ being part of their pre-war ethos. The author considers the memoirs of female communists as a sort of palimpsest, in which under a layer of meanings compatible with the official discourse (on gender) there lurked deeply hidden contents which contested the official discourse.

Książka poświęcona jest procesom przemian tożsamości kobiet w Polsce po 1989 roku, zarejestrowanym we współczesnych tekstach kultury: w literaturze pięknej, (auto)biografistyce, kulturze popularnej, publicystyce. Moment przecięcia ról genderowych i narodowych jest tu kluczowy: pytaniu o rolę kobiet w warunkach polskiej demokracji po 1989 roku towarzyszy pytanie o to, czym różni się ona od roli wyznaczanej Polkom w poprzednich okresach historycznych, oraz o działania, które one same podejmują w celu wypracowania całkiem nowych ról – tych na miarę sytuacji, w której znajduje się dziś Polska. Analizy tożsamości kobiet usytuowane są na szerszym tle przemian, którym podlega całe polskie społeczeństwo, rzucone po 1989 roku na głębokie wody wolnego rynku, globalnej polityki, a zarazem uwikłane w wewnętrzne spory wokół historii, pamięci, tradycji.
Autorka korzysta z narzędzi krytyki feministycznej do analizy tekstów literackich autorstwa kobiet, ale też do analizy samego dyskursu feministycznego w Polsce po 1989 roku. Śledząc mechanizmy konstruowania społecznych ról kobiet, tropi uwikłanie owych ról w relacje władzy, od której nie jest wolny także feminizm.
